What is Endometriosis?

The uterus is lined with a tissue called the endometrium. This is the tissue that sheds during what we know as a period. Those who have endometriosis have endometrial-like cells that grow outside of the uterus, most commonly in the pelvic and abdominal cavity. Currently, we believe that about 1 out of 10 of those that were assigned females at birth are affected by endometriosis.

Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis: (nancy’s nook)

  • Severe pain during menstruation

  • Pelvic or abdominal pain not associated with menses

  • Low back and/or leg pain

  • Pain with sex

  • Painful bowel movements

  • Stomach problems including nausea, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation

  • Fatigue

  • Infertility

How to test for endometriosis:

Your provider may be able to suspect that you have endometriosis based on symptoms. However, the gold standard to diagnose is currently surgery in which there is a biopsy taken of the suspected endometriosis tissue and sent to a pathologist to confirm.

Treatment:

The treatment provided relies heavily on a patient’s goals. The current way to remove endometriosis is surgery. However, not everyone’s goal includes surgery, and their goal relies on managing their symptoms. Additional strategies are physical therapy, nutrition/diet, pain management, and mental health therapies.

How can pelvic floor physical therapy help?

A pelvic PT is a great addition to your team if you have endometriosis, as they can greatly improve your quality of life. Due to the nature of endometriosis, it can cause scarring, adhesions to multiple structures in the body, and reflexive muscle guarding due to pain. Because of this it can contribute to altered postural and movement patterns and involve different neuromuscular and musculoskeletal structures. Your pelvic floor physical therapist will be able to improve your musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, connective tissue dysfunction, and altered movement patterns. This will help you improve your quality of life.
